FAMILIES OF TWO UON STUDENTS KILLED LAST WEEKEND STILL LOOKING FOR ASNWERS

By Maritim Evans
Parents of two University of Nairobi Students who were killed by a mob of students last weekend are still seeking to know what made other students kill their children.
It has been a hard time for the two families as the university administration is failing to give them substantive answers of what really made other students kill Julius Omondi Omollo and Fetya Mohammed Yusuf.
The families have been camping at the offices of the Student Welfare Authority at the university since Sunday from morning to evening.
Journalists, who visited the offices, could not be told anything as no one among the security personnel there was ready to share any information with them. Every security guard would say they were not in a position to share any information with the media since they are not authorised to do so.
On Tuesday, the university Vice Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi sent a statement to newsrooms expressing how students were beaten up and later on succumbed to injuries.

“The beating continued but the university security personnel who condemned the act on the spot intervened and they were hurt in the course of rescuing the suspects whom they rushed to the clinic at the University Health Service. One of the suspects passed on while at the university health services, the other one was rushed to MP Shah Hospital where he was admitted but passed on thereafter,” the statement Prof Mbithi sent to newsrooms reads in parts.
The suspects were self sponsored students who are not given accommodation within the university. Their registration numbers, according to university management, portrayed this.
“The two suspects were later identified as non-resident students by their names,” the statement stated.
The university has however condemned the act and warned students against taking law in their saying that is not acceptable.
“The University of Nairobi highly regrets this unfortunate incident. The university reiterates that it upholds the rule of law and has no place for the law of the jungle where people take the law in their hands and condemns strongly the act of mob-justice by the students involved,” the statement added.
According to the statement the university stated that it had contacted the parents of the deceased to condone with them and promised thorough investigation into the matter. A sentiment that was refused by the parents of the students saying they had not received any information from the university and they are still blank on what made other students kill their children.

JUA KALI BUSINESS IS AS GOOD AS OTHER WELL PAYING JOBS

By Maritim Kipngetich
Few people can work for one employer for a decade, but George Mureithi, 54, has spent more than half his years on earth doing a job many would find difficult to do for 12 months  – Jua Kali.
For the past 36 years, Mr Mureithi has braved scorching sunshine, weathered thick clouds that often rain torrentially to earn his bread and butter at the famous Kamkunji Jua Kali shades.
“I started working here in 1978 just after dropping out of school,” Mr Mureithi speaks with a mirthful smile.

and wheelbarrows, says he procures his materials from Industrial Area where theey are cheaper before modeling them to sell at a margin.
“I buy containers from Industrial Area at a cost of Sh1, 000 per container and I sell them at sh1, 400 after I have made them ready at a cost of Sh150.
“I sell a readymade wheelbarrow for Sh2, 500, although my production cost is around Sh2000,” he says.
Mr Mureithi has seen his business grow many-fold, from an initial Sh50 per day to the current Sh1,000 per day.
“Daily income in this job is not predictable though,” he adds.
Mr Mureithi who says he lives with his family in Kangemi near Kilimani Estate has four children whom he had taken through school using income from the business.
Two of his children are now working for reputable companies in Nairobi.
“I have also been able buy a farm in Naivasha and build a house,” he says.
Another boost for the artisan is that he has teamed up with 12 colleagues with whom each contributes Sh500 per week towards a common pool.
From the income, each of the group members has managed to buy a plot at areas of their choice. The group opened a joint bank account.
So good has been the business that Mr Mureithi says he will be unwilling to accept any other offer even from government, which he terms a poor employer.
All he wishes the government to do is set aside a place for them to work.
“We pay Sh800 tax per month to the county government yet it has never thought of setting aside a better place for us,” he says.
Mr Mureithi admitted that he was contented with his Jua Kali business that is currently worth Sh100, 000.

THEFT IN CAMPUS COMMON NOWADAYS

By Maritim Evans @maritimwilcaso3
Theft is just common nowadays in campus. Some students have come to campus to steal other students’ properties especially electronic gadgets that parents toil and moil to buy their children who are studying in universities.
These prohibitive gadgets such as laptops and phones are the most targeted items by thieves within campus. This is because they are valuable and they have ready market.
Comrades have found away of dealing with thieves that are found either to have stolen an item or trying to steal something within campus.
Comrades usually show no sympathy to a thief.
People beating up thieves. University of Nairobi students last weekend beat up two alleged thieves to death.
Over the weekend, University of Nairobi Main Campus students descended on two alleged thieves who happened to be students and beat them up. One of the suspects were later on pronounced dead on arrival to the students’ clinic and another one succumbed to injuries, he got from the mob justice, at MP Shah hospital. The university identified the deceased as module II students who are not given accommodation within the university.
The weekend incident was not new to students as they usually do so whenever they find someone stealing within the campus.
Students cannot be stopped from dealing with thieves. No one can stop them not even university security guards who usually kept away from such incidences only to pretend to be rescuing alleged thieves when they are almost dying.
It is rare to find an outsider stealing from students. This means thieves are living within students.
Students at the University of Nairobi said there are a group of students who are walking around the campus hostels at night especially on weekends. They said those are the one who usually snatch mobile phones and laptops from those who go for night preps.  Students call them “Goons”.
It is not University of Nairobi alone where theft is common. The vise is common across all other institutions of higher learning. According to students, it is hard to know what makes students steal. This is because they all come from different places and tribes across the country. Some say some students may be thieves naturally while others are stealing because they do not have enough money they can use to beat campus life.

DRAMA AT UON AS TWO THIEVES TRIED TO STEAL BUT CAUGHT BY COMRADES

By Maritim Evans
There was a drama yesterday at the University of Nairobi Main Campus after two alleged thieves were descended upon by comrades.
It was around 6pm yesterday evening when one of the thieves were found trying to still a laptop in Hall 7. Comrades who were filled with furry could not allow him to undertake the act and so the thieve tried to use the powers of his legs to run, but could not go far before comrades caught him up.
The thieve, whose name could not be identified, realized that comrades were faster than him and he decided to leave what he wanted to steal and ran out of the hostel only to be followed by a mob of comrades who ran after him. He was found outside Hall 9 hostel where seniour comrades are living and he could not be spared.
Thieves being worked upon by a mob. Yesterday two thieves were intercepted at UoN.
Anyone could hit him with whatever stick they had and some could stone him. If security guards had failed to intervene the young thieve would be dead now. In fact no one knows his fate. He was later on taken to university clinic to receive medication, but nurses at the clinic said they could not treat him and therefore referred him to Kenyatta National Hospital.
As if that was not enough, another thief who is believed to be an outsider was yesternight found trying to steal some items at Hall 1 hostel. Comrades cannot spare anyone nowadays and they are fond of raising an alarm as first as possible. A loud noise was heard calling “mwizi! mwizi! mwizi! mwzi!” and all over sudden nearly everybody who was inside Hall 2 that is adjacent to Hall 1 was out. Fellow comrades from Hall 1 also came out and ran after the thief who headed to Chancellor Court University (AKA Graduation Square).
The thief was so fast that the comrades could not find him. He could jump over high fence where comrades could not jump. So as the comrades were trying to look for where to pass to the other side of the fence, the thief was running fast at the other side of the fence.
Comrades ran after him as far as National Museum which is about a kilometer from the hostel. They later on not found him and they decided to leave,
Some comrades could identify the thief. They said he was hanging around the Hall 1 and Hall 2 hostel at twilight hours of yesterday. Some said the man must be in his early 30s.
