THEFT IN CAMPUS COMMON NOWADAYS

By Maritim Evans @maritimwilcaso3
Theft is just common nowadays in campus. Some students have come to campus to steal other students’ properties especially electronic gadgets that parents toil and moil to buy their children who are studying in universities.
These prohibitive gadgets such as laptops and phones are the most targeted items by thieves within campus. This is because they are valuable and they have ready market.
Comrades have found away of dealing with thieves that are found either to have stolen an item or trying to steal something within campus.
Comrades usually show no sympathy to a thief.
People beating up thieves. University of Nairobi students last weekend beat up two alleged thieves to death.
Over the weekend, University of Nairobi Main Campus students descended on two alleged thieves who happened to be students and beat them up. One of the suspects were later on pronounced dead on arrival to the students’ clinic and another one succumbed to injuries, he got from the mob justice, at MP Shah hospital. The university identified the deceased as module II students who are not given accommodation within the university.
The weekend incident was not new to students as they usually do so whenever they find someone stealing within the campus.
Students cannot be stopped from dealing with thieves. No one can stop them not even university security guards who usually kept away from such incidences only to pretend to be rescuing alleged thieves when they are almost dying.
It is rare to find an outsider stealing from students. This means thieves are living within students.
Students at the University of Nairobi said there are a group of students who are walking around the campus hostels at night especially on weekends. They said those are the one who usually snatch mobile phones and laptops from those who go for night preps.  Students call them “Goons”.
It is not University of Nairobi alone where theft is common. The vise is common across all other institutions of higher learning. According to students, it is hard to know what makes students steal. This is because they all come from different places and tribes across the country. Some say some students may be thieves naturally while others are stealing because they do not have enough money they can use to beat campus life.
